Sophie Benton 'bows' to no one!
Next week (5th-10th October) Sophie Benton will be competing as part of Team GB in Junior Ladies Barebow at the World Archery European Field Championships in Rzeszow, Poland.
The Barebow style is most akin to what you see Katniss shooting in the Hunger Games and does not have additions to the bow like stabilisers and aiming sights used by Olympic archers.
At the World Championships last year Sophie won through to the Gold Medal final and only narrowly missed securing Gold, coming home with Silver for GB.
World Championships are held every 2 years with the European Championships filling in the gap. 21 countries are represented this year from across Europe and no doubt the competition will be as tough as ever. Sophie, now 17 will compete as a Junior with archers aged from 15 to 20 years old.
She goes with a good season under her belt having won all Field Archery competitions she entered this year and now holding all 5 NI records at under 18 for the discipline.
Sophie said “I’ve trained hard this year and worked on a whole range of different aspects of my shooting and course skills. Field Archery tests you both physically and mentally, and you need both to come together when you compete.”
“I’m really honoured to have qualified and been selected by Archery GB. The World Championships was an amazing experience and I’m really looking forward to shooting in Poland and meeting competitors from all the different countries. As long as I go and feel I did my best then I’ll be more than happy.”
Sophie’s best was certainly good enough last year and who knows, maybe this time it could be Gold!
