Swimming success
At the Swim Ulster Schools’ Championships at the weekend, our swimmers had a number of notable successes.
Ruairi Glynn and Joss Newell (both Year 8) qualified for the Irish Minor Schools Championships which will be held in Dublin in February. Ruairi reached the finals of the age 12 Boys 50m Freestyle.
Rebecca Reid in Year 10 came 1st in the Junior 100m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. Megan McGonigle in Year 11 made the finals of the Intermediate 100m Breaststroke and the 100m Freestyle, whilst Luke Balfour in Year 12 came 1st in the Intermediate 100m Breaststroke.
Emma Reid in Year 13 finished 1st in the Senior 100m Butterfly and the Senior 100m Freestyle. Bethany Houston in Year 13 reached the finals of the Senior 100m Freestyle and the Senior 100m Butterfly. Sam Pyper in Year 13 came 2nd in the Senior 100m Breaststroke and reached the finals of the Senior 100m Freestyle. Maura Glynn in Year 14 reached the finals of the Senior 100m Breaststroke and the Senior 100m Backstroke, just narrowly missing out on a medal in the Breaststroke.
The Senior Girls’ Relay team of Bethany Houston, Emma Reid, Megan McGonigle and Rebecca Reid came 1st in the Medley Team Relay and the Freestyle Team Relay. The senior boys’ team performed just as well - the team of Sam Pyper, Iain Jones, Luke Balfour and Coby Cheetham came 1st in the Medley Team Relay and the Freestyle Team Relay. This means that Regent won gold medals in all four of the senior relays which is an outstanding achievement.
As a result of their individual performances, Maura Glynn, Emma Reid and Bethany Houston were awarded The Nocher Senior Schools’ Cup for Girls.
In addition, Sam Pyper, Emma Reid, Luke Balfour and Rebecca Reid have all been selected for the Ulster Interprovincial Team 2016.
Zach Balfour, Madelyn Calvert, Katie McGonigle and Viktor Kozak also competed and performed well.
