Year 13 attend Young Female Leaders Academy
Year 13 female Government and Politics pupils attended the ‘Young Female Leaders Academy’ at Parliament Buildings Stormont. This was to give the girls the opportunity to learn about the female role within Parliamentary institutions. Throughout the workshop they had the opportunity to meet MLAs, Future Voices representative Mairead Healy and Senator Ivana Bacik from Trinity University.
The girls prepared questions on marriage equality to ask a panel of six MLAs who were from a range of Political Parties (Green Party, Alliance, DUP, Sinn Fein, SDLP, UUP and an Independent MLA. An opportunity arose for them to discuss the issue with Steven Agnew from the Green Party.
During the workshop they also had the opportunity to decide on a proposal for a Private Members Bill and to draw up the bill before delivering a presentation on this. The topic which they decided to focus upon was compulsory education about mental health being integrated into the curriculum.
The experience proved to be very beneficial as it was an interesting and informative day in the beautiful surroundings of Parliament Buildings at Stormont.
