A level Students Join the Conversation

Mr Lowry and A level students meet celebrated documentary maker, Michael Cockerell

Year 13 and 14 History and Politics students recently had the opportunity to “join the conversation” at a major new event which was hosted by the National Trust at Mount Stewart. The “Conversations at Mount Stewart” event took place over the weekend of 17th September and saw eminent academics and commentators from the world of History and Politics engage in topical discussion against the historical backdrop of Mount Stewart House.

Pupils listened as the famous columnist David Aaronovitch discussed the rise of nationalism in Europe and Jonathan Powell, who was Chief of Staff to Tony Blair, recollected his time on the frontline of British Politics. Other discussions ranged from topics as diverse as “the role of the Foreign Secretary” to “the role of the conspiracy theory in modern history” with students also attending an enlightening and inspiring talk which focused on “creating tomorrow’s leaders.”

The benefits to students of attending an event such as this are enormous. Not only did the talks take ideas which are relevant to A level study and explore them in greater depth, but they also explored topics and ideas which are often only addressed during undergraduate study.

The staff and students wish to thank the organisers at Mount Stewart and we look forward to working together in the future.
