'A Little respect' for Music....

The late John O’Donohue said that “to enter a piece of music, or to have the music enfold you , is to depart for a while from regulated time”. Music embraces our whole person, it takes us back in time, offers us a portal to escape from the strangeness of this season and the ongoing challenges of life. Music transports us. Music communicates to us. Music embraces the whole person. Music often carries us over the threshold of life here to something eternal. Music illuminates. Music animates. Music is an immediate presence. Music creates it’s own space and time.

While little is certain in these days, music has, in many cases, been our escapism, our rest place, our enjoyment, our release, our daily rhythm, our discipline. We will have to find new ways of practising and performing together, and we will have to work hard to protect the incredibly rich heritage of music-making at Regent. Music, like art, poetry and literature can be described in the words of Mary Oliver as “an antidote to confusion”.

I am thrilled and grateful to Gary Myles and Tom Myles (Year 14) for giving us just that by offering us some light relief and a reminder of the unparalleled musical talent of our students at Regent House. Show these students ‘a little respect’ and enjoy their take on some Aretha Franklin.

Have a wonderful summer Claire Hamilton (Acting Head of Music)
