Ferris Cup Final
Regent U14s finished runners up to Friend’s School Lisburn in the final of the Ferris Cup. The boys had deservedly reached the final with impressive wins over Markethill, Grosvenor and RBAI but the final proved to be one step too far as Friend’s emerged 2-1 winners. However they were to be without their influential goal-scoring midfielder Tom Myles.
The game was a closely fought affair with both sides having a number of chances early on. Regent were put under a large amount of pressure by Friend’s in the first half but the U14s were able to weather the storm. Sam Hamill was impressive throughout this period, and indeed the whole game, as he repeatedly denied wave after wave of attacks from the Lisburn school. His performance would surely have won him the Man of the Match award had there been one. The U14s held firm and capitalised only moments before the half time whistle. Jack Crossan was fouled in the circle after a skilful run and Callum Walsh dispatched the resulting penalty corner to make the score at half-time 1-0 in Regent’s favour.
The second half started disastrously for the Newtownards side as they conceded two goals within the first five minutes and ultimately conceding in this quick fire manner made recovery very tough. However credit to the U14s as they continued to pressurise the Friend’s side and even had a number of chances to level the score late in the game but they could not find the back of the net.
The game ended in a 2-1 loss. Connor Tweedie, the Regent House Captain, spoke very well and was magnanimous in defeat despite it clearly being a tough defeat to take.
Credit to the U14s for such a competitive final and for the hard work they have put in to reach this final.
